Chapter Six: To Tend the Fields and Culls the Weeds
Rav had assumed that they would be able to move faster without the horses and carts. However, the thick foliage and steep hills they climbed took their toll on him. The Sellswords had a constitution buff that allowed them to move through the forest with relative ease, and Rav was able to cycle additional Ki through his legs to help with the climb, but JesRyn didn’t have that luxury as far as he could tell. She did an admirable job managing to stay with them, but she was not used to running and ran out of breath as they reached the hour mark of their trip.
“I’m a scholar, not a Sellsword or a Soldier. I can’t run all day like you,” she said, as they took another rest so she could catch her breath.
“Should have taken one of the horses,” Stass said.
“Nothing we can do about it now. Stass, do you know how to scout?” Rav asked.
“Yeah, Andros taught me when we first got our job classes.”
“Ok, you take the first shift. We’ll be walking through the night as well. The closer we get to the purple smoke the more animals we’ll have to fight. Since neither of you can fight them without being infected, you’ll be on scout duty while we rest.”
Stass looked at Andros, who nodded, and both of them headed off into the forest to scout the road ahead. They had already abandoned the road in favor of a straight line to where the corruption lay, but now Rav wondered if the worn road might have been easier for JesRyn to travel.
“They’re Sellswords so I can understand how they are able to handle traveling the forest, but you’re a farmer. How are you able to keep up with them so easy, or fight against them,” JesRyn asked him, her eyes studying him, searching for a tell if he lied.
Rav shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly.
“Mostly, it’s because I’m able to use Ki. Something my dad taught me,” Rav said, and heard JesRyn ask what Ki was, but she didn’t ask him, she mumbled it, asking the blessing of Teprikala.
She mumbled to herself for several minutes before turning back to Rav.
“Teach me the breathing techniques you know,” JesRyn said.
Rav smiled, it reminded him of the first time he had asked his dad why he was doing the Ki exercises and he had wanted his father to show him. He taught her the first breathing technique like his father had shown him. He wasn’t sure if his father would be upset or not, but he never made it seem like the Ki techniques were a secret. Rav showed her how to sit and how to take in breath, to imagine it as a living thing inside of yourself. Imagine the breath feeding your body as blood took it and traveled through the veins. It was a simple breathing exercise that allowed a person to feel the internal energy. The first step was to send Ki inside of a person to allow them the ability to feel internal energy.
